Tired of buying all of those self-help books only to have them pile up on a bookshelf and gather dust and stare at you and mock you for not reading them?
I’ve got you!
Therapy Book Club will be a series FOR YOU where I invite you to actually not read the book because I will read it for you. Weekly-ish, I will publish a newsletter that includes an overview of the concepts discussed, a few exercises included in the book (think guided meditations/journal prompts, and a guide to implementing them in your daily life. In the comment section, I hope we can have meaningful discussion about the concepts and thoughts that the book explores.
As a lover of “pleasure reading,” it is hard to find time to read the book that your bestie raves about and how it changed her freakin life. We all get tired of reading a 300+ page book about how we are not doing this or that right and need to level up and optimize our one wild and precious life! Because let’s be honest, sometimes these self-help books are kinda cringe and you turn to the final page with no real action steps or understanding of how to make it useful.
So your Messy Therapist has got you! I will do the dirty work for you. Check back here next week as we explore one of my favorite self help personal growth books The How of Happiness: A New Approach to Getting the Life You Want by Sonja Lyubomirksy.
(See what I mean about the cringe?- the title of this one could evoke that “gahhh another one of these books about getting the life you want? Sure, that’s a load of crap” feeling)
Book Overview:
Learn how to achieve the happiness you deserve
"A guide to sustaining your newfound contentment." --Psychology Today
"Lyubomirsky's central point is clear: a significant portion of what is called happiness . . . is up for grabs. Taking some pages out of the positive psychology playbook, she coaches readers on how to snag it." --The New York Review of Books
You see here a different kind of happiness book. The How of Happiness is a comprehensive guide to understanding the elements of happiness based on years of groundbreaking scientific research. It is also a practical, empowering, and easy-to-follow workbook, incorporating happiness strategies, exercises in new ways of thinking, and quizzes for understanding our individuality, all in an effort to help us realize our innate potential for joy and ways to sustain it in our lives. Drawing upon years of pioneering research with thousands of men and women, The How of Happiness is both a powerful contribution to the field of positive psychology and a gift to people who have sought to take their happiness into their own hands.
In the meantime, check out the quiz Person-Activity Fit Diagnostic to help you clarify which of the 12 activities that Sonja explores in the book that you would actually do that could lead you to find more moments of joy and fulfillment We will circle back to this exercise next week when I share my first installment of Therapy Book Club.
See you next week! :)
